EXPLANATION OF GRADES

Each activity in the BWOC Calendar is graded to guide walkers in the type of experience to expect, e.g. SM600 = Short in distance Under 12km per day Medium terrain (some scrub, rough track) and 600m height gain.

Height gain is the sum (in metres) of all “up hill” ascents during the course of the activity.

Explanation of Distance Codes used:        S = Short (under 12k per day);  M = Medium (12 – 20 k per day); and  L = Long (over 20 k per day)

Canyon Grades:
Grade 1 - easy, no abseil/tricky climbs, navigation not too hard
Grade 2 - easy - moderate, easy abseils/some tricky climbs
Grade 3 - moderate, harder abseils/climbs or navigation
Grade 4 - moderate - difficult
Grade 5 - difficult
Grade 6 - very difficult

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 7.30 p.m.Narara Neighbourhood Centre - After the formalities of the AGM, John L'Estrange will entertain us with a selection of stunning canyoning photos.
7 Saturday ABSEILING PRACTICE - Members only. We cater to all levels from beginners, to those keen progress to abseil canyons later, to people who want to brush up on their abseiling and to those who like a short fun day out in the bush with like minded people. The session can be made to suit any skills you would like to improve. It is essential to book for this activity at least 7 days in advance. Rope fees $5 Harness/Hardware fees $5 apply. BYO leather gloves.
8 Sunday MAP READING/NAVIGATION EXERCISE - not a day walk, local walk with map reading exercises and instruction, limited to 8 participants.
8 Sunday DAY WALK - Staples Lookout to Rocky Ponds with panoramic views of the Hawkesbury River from Tumblecow Ridge. A side trip to Mt Wondabyne is possible. Grade SE100.

DAY WALK - Explore the West Head from Mackerel Beach on the West Head Loop Track in Ku-ring-ai Chase National Park. Views of Lion Island and the Pittwater area. No car shuffle as travel will be by ferry from Ettalong. Grade SM250

14 & 15 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Return to Crayfish Creek - Gloucester Tops - early start from Central Coast so that we can start walking by 10.30 a.m. Partly on track and part off track with great campsite on Crayfish Creek. Bring gaiters and secateurs for lawyer vine. Day two, retrace steps and side trip to Munro Hut on way out. Map: Gloucester Tops Grade: SR200

DAY WALK - Umina Heights to Pearl Beach, all on track. Great opportunity to see the wildflowers.
21 & 22 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Mt Victoria - Blue Gum Forest - Grand Canyon track. This is a Classic Blue Mountains walk in the Grose Valley. All on track excellent beginners walk with beautiful campsite amonst blue gums. Book early as numbers are limited to 8. Grade SM400.

DAY WALK - Watagans, Lyrebird and Rock Liliy Trails. All on track and hopefully the wildflowers and orchids will be out. Grade: ME100.
28 & 29 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Suitable for beginners, easy walk on track to campsite at Asgard Swamp and then explore some of the tracks in the area Girraween Cave and the Engineers Track on Saturday and on Sunday we'll follow a track out to Thor Head. Grade: SE200 - Map: Mt Wilson

INTRODUCTION TO CANYONING - Monkey Face and The Slot - the day's activities will focus on abseiling longer pitches, exposure and tight squeezes into a "hole". This will be a full day and we will finish off the day with a debrief over coffee and cake before we head off home.
5 Sunday HALF DAY WALK - Members of Peninsula Environment Group (PEG) have invited BWOC members on their walk to Warrah Trig which will be a very easy meander/stroll with PEG member Mark Snell, learning how to identify wildflowers. Meet at 10 am Warrah Trig car park (no need to pre-book).

(Father's Day) DAY WALK - Great North Walk - Heaton Gap to Old Forestry HQ.  13kms  passes the Heaton lookout with its spectacular views then into the Watagans. Grade MM 400.

DAY WALK - Manly Quarantine Station. Visit North Head with us and explore the School of Artillery and the Quarantine Station which have to be on some of Sydney's best real estate. There are numerous historic buildings on the site and there are quite extensive areas of native bushland still in a relatively undisturbed state. The views from the Quarantine Station alone make this a must do trip.

KAYAKING - Come and see the Lane Cove river from a different perspective, we'll be launching from a new spot found on the previous Sydney Harbour paddle.This paddle will take us from near the mouth upstream to the National Park away from the hectic Sydney Harbour.

11 & 12 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Kanangra Boyd NP - Kanangra Walls, Cottage Rock, Gingra Range, Brumby Ridge, Kowmung River, camping at Orange Bluff, great campsite. All on track, reverse trip on Sunday. Reasonable level of fitness required for climb out on Sunday., Grade MM900, Map: Kanangra & Yerranderie
18 & 19 Saturday & Sunday CAR CAMP - Morton National Park - Saturday - day walk to The Castle, this is a "must do" for all bushwalkers, small amount of rock scrambling but the views are to die for. Sunday - day walk to Pigeon House, another "must do". Car camp on Saturday night with option to leave the Coast on Friday for early morning start Saturday.

25 & 26 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Petries Gully. Climbing onto plateau and then following un-named ridges to Little Capertee Creek. All exploratory and all off track. Reasonable level of fitness required, great views and the opportunity to walk in an area new to the Club. Participants should expect early start on Saturday. Maps Ben Bullen & Mt Morgan, Grade MM600.

9 & 10 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Liloing the Shoalhaven River through "The Block-up" gorge. Entry via Eldorado Ridge and exiting via the Trestle Track, exploring Paradise Creek, Spring Creek, Fordham Canyon and the chimneys along the way. This is a classic trip not done by BWOC in recent history so, grab the chance now! Towering cliffs, lovely cassuarina shaded campsites, great swimming holes. Car shuffle required. Map: Caoura, Grade: SRW300.
17 Sunday DAY WALK - Popran National Park - exploratory trip down Hominy Creek - some scrub bashing involved, trip limited to 8 participants and must be prepared for anything. Opportunity to cool off in the rock pools so bring your swimmers. Map: Gunderman, Grade SE100     
16 & 17 Saturday & Sunday

CANYONING - Sat. Better Offer, Grade 3. Regarded as a "shortish" day (hah - famous last words). Good for novice/ intermediate canyoners. Car camp Saturday night at Mt Wilson. Sun. Koombanda, Grade 3. Similar time needed to Better Offer, abseiling and some swims so wetsuit recommended. Alternate exit up the old mine road (after exploring to old mine site) may be used. A maximum of 8 persons for each day, including leader and deputy, with an 09:00 start time.

24 Sunday SNORKELLING - Short beach walk from Catherine Hill Bay to snorkel in a couple of protected rock pools, for the adventurous there's the Shark Hole or there's the tamer rock pool to kick back and relax in. There's also an interesting volcanic slot leading off from the Shark Hole which is worth exploring.
23 - 26 Saturday - Tuesday RETURN TO MORONG DEEP - Creek Walk. A classic Kanangra trip. If the weather's good, then camping under the stars by the river is a must, but minimal shelter will be required just in case. There's no abseiling, just a couple of climb downs for those not willing to take the plunge. Wetsuits are optional as the river is usually quite warm by this time of year. A lilo is not essential but makes easy work of the otherwise extended swims. Grade: SRW600. Maps Shooters Hill, Gurnang, Yerranderie & Kanangra (walk out only). An adventure not to be missed!
30 Saturday DAY WALK - Sea Caves - Caves Beach to Snapper Point. Easy beach walk with magnificant sea cave which we will be able to explore due to the anticipated low tide. Bring swimmers and shoes for walking through water. Grade SE100
31 Sunday DAY WALK - Rock-hop from Pearl Beach to Patonga the back to Pearl Beal via the track. Tougher than it sounds with fantastisc views and the opportunity swim. Grade: SE150
30 & 31 Saturday & Sunday

CANYONING - Kanangra Main Canyon - Grade 6 - a long and difficult day requiring an early start. Serious altitude exposure at the first abseil. Exit via Murdering Gully. A maximum of 6 particpants including leader and competent deputy. Car camp at nearby Boyd Crossing. Sunday is TBA depending on how we pull up from Saturday.

3 Wednesday GENERAL MEETING 8.00 p.m.Narara Neighbourhood Centre. SSSafe  which runs snake and spider safety awareness seminars, will give a presentation on venomous snakes and spiders.  The latest first aid protocols will be covered and we'll debunk some myths and old wives tales.
6 Saturday LILOING - Section 1 of the Wollangambe River. An easy walk down to the Wollangambe River on a well used track from Mt Wilson Fire Station. Once at the river, blow up your lilo (air matress) and then float downstream. Drift past massive, fern and moss covered sandstone cliffs, jump into crystal clear pools and occasionally scramble over rocks. A great introduction to the delights of canyoning. Wetsuit and lilo needed. Map: Wollangambie Grade: 1
7 Sunday KAYAKING – join us for some local flat water kayaking, destination depending on weather conditions and participants -  beginners welcome.

CANYONING - Saturday Starlight Canyon - Grade 3 - A fairly straightforward but very, very enjoyable day suitable for novice canyoners about to discard their “trainer wheels”.  Pitch black in one section so Glo-worms are responsible for this canyons name. Bring a really good, water-resistant  headtorch, and wetsuit. Maximum of 8 including a competent deputy leader. Car camp in the historic and picturesque Newnes Valley with swimming and some shop facilties. Sunday Pipeline Canyon - Grade 4 - A bit harder than Starlight but a shorter day with good entry / exit. Enjoyable wind-down after doing Starlight. 

13 Saturday DAY WALK - Glenbrook area - Pisgar Rock to Erskine Creek then rock hop swim downstream to Jack Evans track. Car shuffle required. Grade: SR300    
14 Sunday DAY WALK - mystery creek walk. An easy walk mostly on tracks with numerous opportunities to cool off in deep rock pools, limited to 8 participants and car pooling to start of walk required. Grade SM100.
13 & 14 Saturday & Sunday

CANYONING - Saturday Kalang Falls - Grade 4 - A somewhat difficult day but lots of fun. Don’t be fooled by its Grade 4 status - I think it’s under graded. Lots of exposed abseils at about 40 metres+. Exit via Murdering Gully. Maximum of 6 particpants including leader and competent deputy. Car camp at nearby Boyd Crossing. Sunday Dione Dell - Grade 3 - A fun way to wind down from Kalang. Fairly straightforward with simple entry and exit.   

20 - 14 Saturday - Sunday MULTI DAY WALK - Western Arthurs, a classic trip in Tasmania's Wilderness followed by the Mt Ann Circuit.
21 Sunday DAY WALK - Maitland Bay route dependant on weather on the day, may include Putty Beach, Bullimah spur, with opportunities for swimming. Grade SE150

CYCLING - Brisbane Water National Park - Ride the fire trail through Brisbane Water National Park. Great views out over Brisbane Water. We’ll then head down to Woy Woy for a rest stop and swim. Ride the bike track back to the starting point. Suits Mountain Bikes. Distance approx. 19km. Grade: Medium.

28 Sunday DAY WALK - Birdie beach to Catherine Hill Bay A pleasant summer walk along beaches and trails with ample swimming opportunities at the beach, rock pools and a natural spa if the tides permit, come along and enjoy the great scenery finishing off with cold refreshments at Catho Pub. Grade SE100
27 & 28 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK (No need to carry tent or cooking utensils on this one) - Coastal Walking Track 26 km, medium difficulty. This is a comfortable 2 day walk from Otford north to Bundeena (or vice versa). Variable terrain is covered including flat areas, cliffs, beaches and escarpments with magnificent views. Plenty of opportunities for beach swimming.   Staying overnight at Garie Beach YHA, cost $15 pp.  (Facilities include water, dormitory beds, gas cooking with utensils and crockery, composting toilet). Maximum 8 people.  Various options for transport – most likely using State Rail. Maps: Port Hacking 9129-VI-N (for the northern areas of the park); Otford 9129-IV-S (for the southern areas of the park).
27 & 28 Saturday & Sunday

OVERNIGHT LILOING - Wollangambe one and two, camping overnight in the canyon (grade 2). Day 1: Relax floating down the river and enjoy jumping of the rocky outcrops (if you so desire). We will stop around 3 in the afternoon, so there is plenty of time to pitch camp and relax by the river. Day 2: leisurely start and more of the same.  Limit of 8 people.

3 Wednesday The WEDNESDAY WALKs are back! - Exploratory, often off track, everyone welcome, not too difficult, always local.
3 Wednesday GENERAL MEETING 8.00 p.m.Narara Neighbourhood Centre - for this meeting we will be holding a number of concurrrent "mini" workshops. You have the option to "drop in" on one of three areas set up, or just stand around and socialise drinking coffee! The techniques of "stitching" images to make a panorama will be demonstrated; There'll be a knotting (alpine butterflies, bowlines, fisherman's and figure of eights) workshop; and an intro into "getting yourself lost" (learn how to read a map) will be given.
6 Saturday CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY - car park for Rocky Ponds walk on Woy Woy road
7 Sunday KAYAKING – join us for some local flat water kayaking, destination depending on weather conditions and participants -  beginners welcome. 
8 - 21 Monday - Sunday MULTI DAY WALK - Milford and Kepler tracks in NZ from 8 - 15 March and then cycling the Ottago Bike Trail.
14 Sunday DAY WALK - Strickland State Forest circuit walk. An easy, cool walk through tall eucalypts and lush rainforest. A diversity of flora can be seen including loop pines and bunya pines. The walk through the old arboretum is interesting and great cliff and boulder scenery as well. Grade SE100     
13 & 14 Saturday & Sunday CANYONING/ABSEILING - Saturday - Fortress Canyon grade 2: Easy canyon involving 1 abseil, some swims and jump-ins. This is one of my favorite canyons ending up at the natural spa overlooking Govetts Valley. Limit of 8 people. Sunday - Malaita Point Abseil, (easy/medium) This is a nice and easy abseil trip. If you haven’t done one before then this is a perfect starting trip. There are 6 pitches (the longest is about 40 meters). Enjoy the views to Mt Solitary and the Three Sisters. Limit of 8 people.

CYCLING - Central Coast mountain bike trip.

20 - 27 Saturday & Sunday CYCLING - East Gippsland Rail Trail (rail trails are shared-use paths recycled from abandoned railway corridors, therefore “flat as”) starts at Bairnsdale and meanders past farmland and through bushland, over spectacular bridges and finishes at Orbost on the Snowy River. The rail trail is about 100k, all easy reasonably flat riding and there are a number of side trips.  Accommodation will depend on the participants but will probably be caravan parks. 
21 Sunday DAY WALK - Robert's Ridge - lovely ridge walk with views of Hawkesbury River. All off track but not scrubby, much of the walk is on rock platforms, some rock scrambling at the end. Limited to 8 participants. Car Shuffle. Map: Gunderman, Grade SM100     
27 & 28 Saturday & Sunday GOURMET OVERNIGHT WALK - Newnes to Glen Davis via the Pipeline Track. Walk all on track through magnificent pagoda country, great views and easy walking. Camp in the camping area at Glen Davis and the ladies of the Glen Davis Community Association will provide us with a 3 course gourmet meal ($15 per person). Walk back to Newnes on Sunday and depending on time, option to explore the Glen Davis area.

2 - 5 Friday - Monday EASTER MULTI DAY WALK - Kosciuszko National Park - Thredbo - Crackenback Chair Lift, Mt Townsend, The Sentinal, Charlottes Pass, Wrights Creek and The Rams Head. Highlights of the trip will be climbing Mt Townsend and The Sentinal, visiting the old Restaurant ruins near Wrights Creek and camping amongst the rocks in "stone henge" (The Rams Head). Back to Thredbo on Day four via Dead Horse Gap or chair lift depending on time. Map: Kosciuszko. Grade: MM300

WHITEWATER RAFTING - For the thrill of whitewater action in a safe environment come down to Penrith Whitewater Stadium, don the wetsuits and challenge yourself on the white water rafting course. A fully qualified instructor will take us through the course. Bring swimmers, wetsuit (can be hired for small fee), towel and secure footwear (eg runners). You must be confident in the water and a good swimmer (min age 12). Duration 90 minutes, Cost $89. Booking must be paid for and confirmed two weeks prior. Be in it to make your splash, it will be a day to remember!

7 Wednesday WEDNESDAY WALK - Exploratory, often off track, everyone welcome, not too difficult, always local.
7 Wednesday GENERAL MEETING 7.30 p.m.Narara Neighbourhood Centre. Presentation: Slide show trip up to the Cape York Peninsula.
10 & 11 Saturday & Sunday CAR CAMP - Mt Wilson. Two off track exploratory adventures to the Wollangambe are planned but for those not wishing to challenge themselves,visit the open gardens, walk some of the self guided easy track walks in the area (maps will be provided) or drink cappucinos in the lovely cafe at Mt Wilson. This is your opportunity to see Autumn at it's best! Village lanes carpeted in the red and gold of fallen leaves, stunning manicured gardens, avenues of mature oak, maple and beech trees, the weekend will be a feast for the eyes. Car camp at Mt Wilson's Cathedral Reserve. A special celebration is planned for Saturday evening.

RESCUE SKILLS PRACTICE - Belaying and Hauling. Maximum of 6, low / intermediate experience, dedicated canyoners (no beginners please) for this useful but fun day. We’ll be using some really cool gear so gadget freaks look out!

TREE TOPS ADVENTURE PARK - night-time adventure! Located in the Yarramalong Valley, Tree Tops Adventure Park consists of 76 challenges in the tree tops, where participants can slide down Flying Foxes, move from tree to tree on suspension bridges and enjoy many other exciting activities up to 15 metres above the forest floor! To add to the challenge, BWOC will have the park to ourselves for a night-time adventure where we'll travel through the courses with headlights. A maximum of 20 applies to the event. Deposit will be required and full payment must be made 1 week prior to the 17th. After finishing the course we'll all meet up for dinner to celebrate. Cost $45 per adult.

KAYAKING - Drummoyne to Gladsville Bridge, Turbine Creek, under Burns Road Bridge then along northern shore to Kellys Bush, cross to Cockatoo Island and Spectacle Island. Lunch at Cockatoo island on Slipway 1. Should take no more than 4 hours total paddling. Weather dependant but alternative will be available.

DAY WALK - Popran National Park, fire trail to Koala Creek, follow creek to cliffline, explore for route through cliff line and if one does not present itself, back track to Postman's Track and follow track down into valley. Walk up stream and negotiate route back to vehicles via un-named creek. On and off track walk in the Mangrove Mountain area. Numbers limited so book early, wear gaiters and gloves. KAYAKING - Myall Lake & Tea Gardens upper river area. At this time of year the weather is perfect with calm, mirror-like water and the cooler weather makes
for great paddling in protected waters. We'll camp overnight in the lush bush campsites (with toilets) at Mungo Brush on the outskirts of Tea Gardens and enjoy a warm campfire on the waters edge. Close to Tea Gardens for supplies, National parks fees are required aprox $7.00 per night.

DAY WALK - Great North Walk (rather than pick up where we left off in the Spring, we're going to start from the Newcastle end and head South – ending at Patonga Pub) Queens Warf to Teralba Station. 25 km easy walking  from Newcastle around parts of picturesque Lake Macquarie  finishing at Teralba Station  Grade LE150.
15 & 16 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Gospers Ridge - Mailes Ridge to Colo Meroo. Walk upstream on the Colo River to camp below Mt Townsend and then on Sunday walking upstream to Tootie Creek. This is a lovely walk with a great campsite, suitable for beginners. Map: Mountain Lagoon, Grade SE300

DAY WALK - St Ives along pipeline track and Bungaroo track down to Middle Harbour Creek.(Garigal Ntl Park). Come along for some track walking crossing the creek at the stepping stones continuing on to Davidson park. Track follows much of Midddle Harbour Creek with great water views. Sandstone caves and look-outs on the way and wildlife.Walk past where Governor Phillip and his party of nine camped in 1788 looking for farming land. Car shuffle required. Maps Hornsby 1:25 000 & Sydney 1:100 00. Grade: SE200

OVERNIGHT WALK – Wollemi creek area - Friday evening departure, supper at Windsor, car camp on Friday night at Hollow Rock. This is the fifth in a series of overnight exploratory walks along Wollemi Creek, the intent of which is to develop a number of multi-day round trip walks. Off track over new ground to Wollemi Creek to explore the feasibility of creek walking down to Goba Creek. This is a classic walk that everyone should have on their "to do" list, the views are fabulous and there's a nice campsite. 4 Sunday DAY WALK - Heaton Circle, returning to find a cave we missed last time we walked in this area. A combination of track and off track with a little rock hopping in mostly dry creeks, some scrambling and hand-line work may be required, a small climb is optional. Great views from Heaton Lookout to start and finish the day. Bring along a billy (or a fridge full of Coke) to finish the day admiring the view whilst enjoying a well earned cuppa. Grade: SM200 Map Quorrobolong.

11 Sunday DAY WALK - Barrenjoey Lighthouse and headland. If time permits we wil explore on to Avalon. Ferry to Palm Beach and bus back to Palm Beach from end of walk to return on ferry.
10 & 11 Saturday & Sunday ADVENTURE CAVING - Jenolan Caves, come and join us as we squeeze, bump and climb through winding ancient passageways with only our headlamp on. The Mammoth Cave is our challenge for the day which has enormous caverns and a swift underground river. You’ll be climbing and doing some ladder work plus getting muddy. All equipment is provided including the overalls & 2 x guides, bring a packed lunch as you're underground for 6 hours. Can promise you a great day! Need a group of 10, $160.00 pp, accommodation probably at the Gatehouse $32 per adult (BYO linen). We also have an option of Yulefest dinner at Jenolan Caves House Saturday night $75-$80 pp including Christmas gift. Sunday: option of day walk. Deposit will need to be paid about a month before.

Exploring much on the northern side of Middle Harbour Creek with side trips to the Natural Bridge and Bantry Bay Explosives Magazine Building complex used between 1915 and 1974 for public works such as the Harbour Bridge and WW2. Short car shuffle. Maps Sydney and Parramatta. Grade: SE300

HALF DAY WALK - combined walk with members of Peninsula Environment Group (PEG) - Umina Rampart Track, meet at Woy Woy Environment Centre (Blackwall & Billabong Rds) at 9.30am to carpool to walk. This is short-ish but there's a bit of bushbashing and a small, fairly easy scramble down a couple or rocks, it's a great little walk. No need to pre-book on this walk, just turn up!

OVERNIGHT WALK - Tootie Creek - beginner's easy walk along ridge and down a spur to the Colo River. Once at the river we will head downstream to great campsite overlooking the river. OVERNIGHT WALK - Blue Mountains NP - Mt Solitary - drive to Narrowneck and walk down the Golden Staircase to Federal Pass track and follow it up to the top of Mt Solitary with a side trip to the Ruined Castle. Camp in Singajingawell Creek. On Sunday we will descend down the Eastern Col into the Kedumba Valley and then climb onto Kings Tableland. Some easy rock scrambling involved climbing up and down Mt Solitary, may need to carry water for camp if it has been dry, all on track. Suitable for beginners. Numbers limited to 8 so BOOK EARLY. Maps: Katoomba & Jameison Grade SE300.

Car camp Mt Wilson Saturday night.

24, 25 & 26 Saturday, Sunday & Monday CREEK WALK - Morong Deep. A classic Kanangra trip. If the weather's good, then camping under the stars by the river is a must, but minimal shelter will be required just in case. There's no abseiling, just a couple of climb downs for those not willing to take the plunge. Wetsuits are optional as the river is usually quite warm by this time of year. A lilo is not essential but makes easy work of the otherwise extended swims. Everyone welcome that can swim and survive the walk out Megalith Ridge (600m height gain). Grade: SRW600. Maps Shooters Hill, Gurnang, Yerranderie & Kanangra (walk out only). An adventure not to be missed!

7 Saturday TWILIGHT WALK - Half Day Twilight walk in the Wyrrabalong NP. Approximately four hour walk in the late afternoon along a pretty and cool coastal track with angophoras, palms and oceans views. Optional picnic at sunset near Shelley Beach.

Not too long, not too difficult but with that magic touch of exposure and  excitement to make the trip well worthwhile. Plus wonderful views of the Kedumba Valley (Pitts Ampitheatre) and, if you dont fancy the uphill walk out, ride the Scenic Railway up and back to the start.

8 Sunday DAY WALK - Pearl Beach - Umina Heights - Pearl Beach. He's back! Now that he's retired, Denis Ryan returns to the fold with an Interesting mix of off and on track walking this month. His walks are filled with interesting local knowledge and "points of interest".
7 & 8 Saturday & Sunday ABSEILING - Castle Head abseil (Saturday) - If you only do one Blue Mountains abseil this year, this has to be it - an abseil with history (in earlier times, before OH&S, workers used rough wooden ladders to descend Castle Head to get to the mines near the Ruined Castle)  Now you too can descend Castle Head with style, joy, lots of fresh air (above, around and especially below you), exhilaration, excitment, best views. a magic place. Limited numbers. Car Camp Saturday night venue tba.
Boars Head abseil (Sunday) Short half day abseil, short dry abseils - looks simple. Then you walk the ledge to "the slot" (gulp!) but quickly realise that it's only mental and all that time you spent training comes to life - and do you know you're alive! There are better views in the mountains, but there's not much better rock. Sheer fun. Limited numbers

There are opportunities along the way to stop for a coffee and a hot pie (or cake) at Toukley or Wyong.

3 Sunday DAY WALK - Great North Walk, Thornleigh to Crosslands - the section of the walk follows the headwaters of Berowra Creek down to the Crosslands camping area. There is some suburban walking at the beginning and the end. Roughly 10k, Grade SE200.
10 Sunday DAY WALK - Historical Walk in the Wiseman's Ferry area. Explore the convict built road at Devine's Hill and then Finches descent. This trip will take in the convict road bridge (not to be confused with the well known Clare's Bridge). This is a classic walk on the Central Coast and is a "must do" for everyone. Grade SE200.
9 & 10 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Goulburn River National Park - following unnamed ridge to Goulburn river and then walking along the river bank to Morrison's Flats. Partly on and partly off track although easy walking through open bushland. Camp site overlooks the river and when last visited was nicely groomed grassy bank (thanks to the many wombats in the area). The river winds through spectacular sandstone cliffs. Easy walk out on Sunday on fire trail. SM200

BIKE RIDE - Ourimbah State Forest Ride – This ride is not for the faint hearted…..Starting at Palmdale we travel over mostly unsealed roads to Moores Point Road. Here we begin a 300 metre climb up, and up and up on fire trails into Ourimbah State Forest. Once we’re up life gets a little easier, heading along the ridge top on Red Hill Road until we met Scallens Ridge Road. From here it’s all down, down, down; back to our starting point.

This area has many great day walks and bike rides that we can do plus a nice campsite and area for campfire. Activities will be determined based on participants so register your interest early. Small National Parks camp fee applies $10 per person per night, $5 for children. Book in early as spaces are limited.

Plenty to do in   this area. Travelling to Warrumbungles on Friday & returning Monday (or travel up Saturday if you wish).

14 Sunday PADDY PALLIN 6 HOUR ROGAIN - This year BWOC will go all out to enter one or more teams in the Paddy Pallin 6 hour rogain Rogaining is a navigation sport where teams of two to five people use maps to find as many checkpoints as possible during a set period of time. This year's rogain will be on the South Coast, near Nowra (organised by the NSW Rogaining Association). There will be the opportunity to camp in the area on the night before.
14 Sunday DAY WALK - this interesting mix of off track and on track walk takes in several aboriginal engraving sites as well as the historic railway track used for the old Woy Woy Bassalt Quarry back in 1928. There are some nice views to be experienced en route on this medium to easy walk. Participants to meet at Pearl Beach picnic shelter. Grade SM200.

BIKE RIDE - BWOC Loop Lake Macquarie Challenge - All on sealed roads (small section of bike track). Start and finish at Wyee Railway Station following a similar route to the “Lake Macquarie Loop the Lake Bike Challenge”. The entire loop is 84km, but can be shortened by hopping on a train back to Wyee from various Stations along the second half of the ride (track work dependant). Any style of bike. Grade: Medium/Hard.

25 & 26 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Fishing trip to Cox's River.Carlon's farm, Carlon creek, Breakfast creek, Coxs River. Camp at junction. Return via the same route or up Ironmonger ridge. This trip would suit trout fisher persons who would like try their luck in the Coxs River. No guarantees of fish but will guarantee
a lovely weekend.

BIKE RIDE - Ride the Old Great North Road from Bucketty to Wiseman's Ferry - Experience the ruggedness of Yengo and Dharug National Parks as well as the Judge Dowling Range. The convict built road has something for everyone….great views, quiet isolation, and convict history. Approx 46km. Car shuffle required. Mountain Bikes only. Grade: Medium.

9 Sunday DAY WALK - Rumbulara and Katandra.  Easy walk 15km. Grade SE150.
7 - 10 Friday, Saturday, Sunday & Monday

XC SKIING - OVERNIGHT TOURING on the Main Range (dates depending on snow conditions). Time to dust off the boots & wax the skis! Probably head out from Thredbo, take the lift up the plateau & ski out to Swampy Plains Creek. Set up snow camp along the creek, south of Lake Cootapatamba. From there we can do a number of day trips including skiing up Mt Kosci - & also back down. Yahoooo!!!!! Also explore the Rams Heads. Must be able to ski with a full pack & have all the necessary equipment. The weather is always unpredicatble & conditions can get quite extreme, with temperatures quickly dropping well below freeezing. Coversely, conditions can also be blissful with beautiful sunny days, perfect scenery & not a snowboarder in sight. For those who need it, XC ski hire at Cooma or preferably Jindabyne (Wilderness Sports or Paddy Pallin).  Grade:  Medium / Hard, but well worth it.

16 Sunday DAY WALK - Rocks Ramble - join us on a journey into the past, we will be covering some of the area of the First Fleet landing, we’ll investigate and talk of the early years and some of the characters with the walk ending up at The Rocks. About 3 km. With some steps etc. Numbers limited.

DAY WALK - Taffy's Rock – from Cowan Station we take the Jerusalem Bay track to Taffy's Rock lookout. Great scenery, fabulous rock platforms provide the lunch spot with a view over the Hawkesbury River. Grade ME300

30 Sunday DAY WALK - Muogamarra Nature Reserve, used for educational and scientific purposes and rich in evidence of both the original inhabitants and the early European settlers, is only open for 6 weekends each year so that its pristine condition may be protected. The wildflowers in the reserve will offer a stunning display at this time of year. Small entry fee payable.
29 & 30 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - One of Australia's most popular walks, the Blue Gum Forest.  Day 1 - Short car shuffle leaving some cars at top of Perry's Lookdown track.  Then, starting from Govetts's Leap, crossing to Evans Lookout, descending to the Rodriguez Pass track, on to Junction Rock and camping at Acacia Flat.  Day 2 - Blue Gum forest then ascending the steep Perry's Lookdown track. Grade medium - total distance approx 16km - need to carry water.

6 Sunday DAY WALK - Part 5 of the GNW. Crosslands to Cowan Station. Continue along Berowra Creek to Sam’s Creek. Up the 80 metre cliff, along the ridge and down to Berowra Waters. Follow Berowra Creek up 80metre Cliff – another one! Then up to  Cowan  Station . Scenic M200 – some hard sections.
12 Saturday BIKE RIDE - Lemon Tree Ride – A 10km ride through the Onley State Forest. All on unsealed roads and fire trails. With only 100m elevation change this will be a relaxed mountain bike ride. This will be followed by an exploratory ride through the areas trails for those who want to keep going. Mountain bike or hybrid. Grade: Easy.
13 Sunday DAY WALK - Clontarf to Manly walk. This very scenic walk takes us around the foreshore of Sydney Harbour. We will visit the Grotto Pt Lighthouse and also go and visit the now heritage listed old shacks which were built into the side of the cliff. These are very interesting to explore. Will continue on past Reef Beach and Forty Baskets Beach to Manly.

19 & 20 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Return to The Pondage. 4WD vehicles needed to drive out to Newnes (the road is very rough), then we'll be walking out to "The Pondage". This is classic "pagoda country" and for those who haven't been to the area before, it's a "must do". Track nearly non existant and some rock scrambling involved, we should arrive at camp in the late afternoon just in time to see the sunset over Pantony's Crown. Grade SR200. This is the third in a series of overnight exploratory walks along Wollemi Creek, the intent of which is to develop a number of multi-day round trip walks. On track down to Wollemi Creek via Crawfords Pass. Exploratory walk up and back along Munee Creek (it is not very far on the map but work on covering the ground at about 1km/hr). Map: Six Brothers, Grade SR400
24 Saturday BIKE RIDE - Gosford to Woy Woy with Peninsula loop, and return to Gosford - All on road or bike track. Starting at Adcock Park in Gosford ride the cycle path to Woy Woy, then by road through Blackwall, Booker Bay, Ettalong, and Umina, back to Woy Woy and return to Gosford. Approx 36kms. Grade: Easy. Any style of bike.

7 - 14 Saturday - Saturday MULTI DAY WALK - Kosciusko to Kiandra – camping at various huts along the route, fabulous scenery and visiting areas such as Mt Tate and the headwaters of the Snowy River.  Total walking distance approx 110 k with 8 days walking.

This is the fourth in a series of overnight exploratory walks along Wollemi Creek, the intent of which is to develop a number of multi-day round trip walks. Off track down to Wollemi Creek via Martin’s Pass. Exploratory walk up Wollemi Creek to investigate an un-named creek at +/- 280720 in an attempt to get out of the gorge on the western side. 22 Sunday DAY WALK - Pretty Beach/Wagstaffe, stopping at Lobster Beach for a swim then rock walk the foreshore to Half Tide Rocks and return to Lobster Beach for a swim. The walk will finish with coffee at Killcare.

CANYONING - Saturday - Tiger Snake canyon (Grade 3), a great canyon with some nice abseils and an easy walk out, limited numbers. Sunday - Deep Pass (Grade 1), a short canyon which will be done in reverse with no swims.
23 - 26 Monday - Thursday CAR CAMP - Lemon tree Passage staying at the Koala Shores Caravan Park. The activities will mainly be kayaking/canoeing and some cycling. Everyone is welcome even if you wish to just chill out in a beautiful setting for a few days.

GOURMET OVERNIGHT WALK - Newnes to Glen Davis via the Pipeline Track. Walk all on track through magnificent pagoda country, great views and easy walking. Camp in the camping area at Glen Davis and the ladies of the Glen Davis Community Association will provide us with a 3 course gourmet meal ($15 per person). Walk back to Newnes on Sunday and depending on time, option to explore the Glen Davis area.

Day two we'll continue down to Bungonia Creek and exit the river up the White Track. Easy overnight walk for beginners, only one creek crossing. Map: Caroura, Grade SE400

12 & 13 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Easy walk down Canoe Creek track to the upper reaches of the Colo River.  We’ll then wander upstream to find a sandy, Casuarina-shaded campsite and spend the rest of the afternoon wallowing in the cool, crystal clear waters of the Colo River.   We’ll retrace our steps back to the cars on Sunday morning before the heat of the day. This walk is suitable for beginners. Map: Colo Heights, Grade SE400

26 - 1 Saturday - Friday CAR CAMP - the annual Mt Wilson car camp between Christmas and New Year is back on the calendar this year. Join BWOC members at the Cathedral Reserve in Mt Wilson. Some canyons will be on offer (depending on availability of leaders), otherwise there are a number of self-guided walks in the area (maps/details available). Or, just laze around and enjoy the great Mt Wilson weather, cool and hopefully sunny!

26, 27 & 28 Saturday & Sunday & Monday CREEK WALK - Morong Deep. A classic Kanangra trip. Although this trip can be done in 2 days, we'll be setting a leisurely pace this long weekend. If the weather's good, then camping under the stars by the river is a must, but minimal shelter will be required just in case. There's no abseilign, just a couple of climb downs for those not willing to take the plunge. Wetsuits are not required as the river is usually quite warm by this time of year. A lilo is not essential but makes easy work of the otherwise extended swims. Everyone welcome that can swim and survive the walk out Megalith Ridge (600m height gain). Grade: SRW600. Maps Shooters Hill, Gurnang, Yerranderie & Kanangra (walk out only). An adventure not to be missed!

This is a walk not to be missed, not too difficult and shortish walk into campsite (possible campcave), water for trip must be carried in. Fantastic rock formations and cliffs ... watch the sunset on Pantoney's Crown whilst sipping Cab Sav or if early enough we can explore the area looking for aboriginal art. 8.30 a.m. departure from Newnes. Distance not long but broken pagoda country. Marion has been there before but her memory is not to be relied on so she says to expect the unexpected.

20 Sunday DAY WALK - Wattagans Creek walk, walk through ferny verdant rainforests, a classic Wattagans walk. Grade SM200.
19 & 20 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Blue Mountains National Park. Exploratory walk, grade SR200, i.e. completely off track and very rough scrub with steep rocky bits (world heritage wilderness at its best). This would be the middle section of a potential Katoomba to Glenbrook walk exploring Erskine Loop and environs north, looking for a traverse from Kings Table Land Road to Woodford Fire Trail. If have two cars to shuffle: Red Rock Fire Trail off Kings Table Land Road, Erskine Creek - overnight on the creek (perennial water) - Mt Erskine, the Massif Ridge, The Wheel, back to car at locked gate at Glenbrook end of Woodford Fire Trail. If only one car: start and finish at the finish point of previous alternative, then retrace steps on Sunday, or possibly try different routes in and out. 25, 26 & 27 Friday, Saturday & Sunday ANZAC DAY LONG WEEKEND - OVERNIGHT WALK - Return to The Pondage. 4WD vehicles needed to drive out to Newnes (the road is very rough), then we'll be walking out to The Pondage, camping for two nights and doing a day walk in the area, or you can just lay around camp and read a good book. This is classic "pagoda country" and for those who haven't been to the area before, it's a "must do". Track nearly non existant, we should arrive at camp in the late afternoon just in time to see the sunset over Pantony's Crown. Grade SR200. Map: Ben Bullen & Cullen Bullen

Camp in caves/overhangs with time to explore the plateau. Have breakfast watching the sunrise from Lou's "breakfast spot", with the promise that you'll remember this for the rest of your days! Return via Golden Stairs to Narrow Neck with side trip down the "Water Board Ladders". Grade ME400
31 & 1 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Shoalhaven River, Badgery's crossing to Canoe Creek (really good campsite with great swimming hole although this time of year may be a bit chilly). Car Camp/Day Walkers needed to drop overnight walkers at Kanangra, they can then car camp and do day walks at Boyd River Crossing/Kanangra plateau. Overnighters walk through to Carlon's Farm or Katoomba and are picked up by Day Trippers on the way home on day 3 or catch train home from Katoomba. Anyone interested in the day walk side, please contact Lou. This is a great trip walking along beautiful valleys in an untouched area.

28 & 29 Saturday & Sunday ADVENTURE CAVING WEEKEND – Jenolan Caves Come and join us as we squeeze, bump and climb through winding ancient passage ways with only your head lamp on. There are 4 caves that can be attempted but we'relooking at the Mammoth Cave (bit more of a challenge) which has enormous caverns and swift underground river. You’ll be climbing and doing some ladder work plus getting muddy. All equipment is provided including overalls, bring a packed lunch as takes about 6 hours. Need a group of 10 or 12 for the other caves.

19 Saturday MORNING WALK - Peninsula Environment Group will take us on a short walk on Blackwall Mountain. An easy, gentle-paced walk, suitable for families, although with some uphill walking. We will be familiarised with the plants and flowers of the reserve. Wear sturdy enclosed shoes, bring usual daywalking equipment including sunscreen, raincoat, snacks, water and camera. The walk will finish at approximately 12 noon.

OVERNIGHT WALK - Colo Gorge - Camp at Hollow Rock car park on the Friday night and on Saturday follow the Boorai Ridge to Pass #7 of the magnificent Colo Gorge. Great camp sites and plenty of wood for campfire. Sunday follow Colo gorge upstream ( possibility of quicksand) to Pass #6 where we leave the Colo River and clamber up to Hollow Rock car park. Grade SR 500- You need reasonable rock scrambling experience for this trip-Map -Six Brothers 9031-1V-S
27 Sunday DAY WALK - Tunnel track to Woy Woy Tunnel - walk out to Mullet Creek and investigate the creek to the end. Check out the entrance to Woy woy Tunnel and back through the bush to Thommo's Loop track, some off track/bush bashing. Map: Gosford, Grade SM100
26 & 27 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - St Helena Crater, BMNP. This is a must-see for those who love Hawksbury Sandstone and its associated plant communities. Mostly on tracks, the walk ends in a short bush bash. Suitable for novices. Park cars at Station Street, Glenbrook, head out along old coal supply road to The Duckhole (the site of a 1903 steam powered water pump) then up onto St Helena Ridge for about 6km, then (where the spur track joins) bush bash down into the Crater (because walking track access is blocked by huge blackberry thicket). Return by same route. SM150. Map: Penrith.

17 Sunday HALF DAY BIKE RIDE - Kariong/Woy Woy (Spike Milligan Bridge) – Follow bike path to end of Woy Woy Channel - return to Point Clare. This ride will involve a short car shuffle. You will need a mountain bike or road bike with heavy tyres and we'll ride the trail that goes parallel to Brisbane Waters Drive through the National Park, detouring to look at the Aboriginal Carvings at Kariong and returning from the Woy Woy Bridge on the bike path. 17km with some steep and rocky ground.
16 & 17 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Yengo National Park - Putty Road - Howes Valley Creek - Macdonald River - Putty Road Bridge. Walk down Howes valley creek to junction of the Macdonald River (11.5ks). Follow the Macdonald river for another 3.5ks to camp at a rock overhang. The next day, retrace steps to junction & then follow the Macdonald river up to the Putty Road Bridge. New area for BWOC, expect anything including quicksand. This walk is entirely along sandy, flat, wide creek & river beds. Do bring volleys or insulated booty's. Water, no problems. Walk will not proceed if there has been recent heavy rain(car shuffle required). Height gain negligible. All welcome. Grade MM50. Maps: Mount Yengo & Howes Valley.

This is a 'not to be missed' presentation which will give us all a clearer understanding of what happens when things go 'pear shaped'.

Walk in from Glenbrook via Martins Lookout, bush regen activities primarily mapping extent of blackberry infestation. Overnight camp, more bush regen activities, walk out same route. This activity will be in conjunction with members of other bushwalking clubs.
27 & 28 Saturday & Sunday CANYONING- Wolgan Valley Canyons (exploratory). Early Saturday morning departure, car camp at Newnes (Capertee Creek camp ground). Previous canyoning/abseiling experience required as this, being exploratory, anything is possible. Maps: Mt Morgan and Cullen Bullen.
28 Sunday DAY WALK - "The Pallisdes". Ferry to Little Wobby, climb up to the Pallisaides and then walk across to Rocky Ponds and then down to Woy Woy. Probably one of the best walks on the Central Coast to view the wildflowers and you get a ferry trip thrown in! Grade SM200.

3 Friday GENERAL MEETING - 8.00 p.m. Point Clare Guides Hall - presentation by Peter Comino on the February/March 2008 walks in New Zealand and Tasmania. If you're thinking about walking in NZ or Tasmania, this is a meeting not to be missed.
4 Saturday DAY WALK - capture the essence of spring with a walk amongst the flannel flowers and other spring wildflowers in the Munmorah SRA. This walk starts at the park entrance of Munmorah SRA on the Pacific Highway and finishes at the Catherine Hill Bay pub.
4, 5 & 6 Saturday, Sunday & Monday CAR CAMP - Ettrema, camping at Quiera Clearing we'll be exploring access to and from Ettrema Creek and Gorge. Day 1 - the fastest way in, The Jumps. Day 2 - checking out the exit points Tullyangela to Howards Pass. Day 3 - Myall Creek, Jingles Pass, pick up Doug's hat left in a cave some 6 years ago. Don't miss this opportunity to explore this pristine wilderness area. Great camp site, all walks are off-track, bring your maps, compass and GPS.

DAY WALK - Box Head to Putty Beach via Tallow Beach. Good walk for spring with stunning views and the opportunity for a swim, sea breezes guaranteed. Possible side trip down to Ladders Beach and around the rocks to Box Head depending on participants on the day. Distrance about 5k mostly on tracks.

11 & 12 Saturday & Sunday OVERNIGHT WALK - Saint Helena Crater bush regeneration working bee. Walk in from Glenbrook via the Duck Hole, bush regen activities, overnight camp, more bush regen activities, walk out same route. Activities include pulling cobblers pegs weeds, cutting and painting herbicide on blackberry canes, mapping and documenting the extent of the problem.

COCKATOO ISLAND CAMPING WEEKEND - Cockatoo Island is located in Sydney Harbor (west of the Harbor bridge) and has recently been restored and opened for Camping. Arrive by 12:45 PM Ferry from Circular Quay on Saturday afternoon, explore the Island, the former shipbuilding site and convict prison, then stay the night. Kayaking available. 22 Saturday ALL ABOUT BUGS! - BWOC has been invited to join the Society for Insect Studies at Peats Ridge. Starting at 1 p.m. there'll be a bushwalk through a fascinating section of the Brisbane Water NP with Denis as he shows us the stunning array of insect fauna that has always been in the bush at your fingertips. Finish off the day with a BBQ from 5.30 to 6.00 pm (BYO) and then 2 light traps will be set up for the evening which will attract insects of the night for us to view. There's plenty of room to camp on the property and the date is at a low phase of the moon, so light trapping should prove to be interesting.
23 Sunday DAY WALK - Umina Heights and engravings walk. Walk around the cliff tops with expansive views of Brisbane Waters, scrub bash across to Patonga Track, down the Pearl Beach track and then down the waterfall track to Pearl Beach. Grade MM200   
22 & 23 Saturday & Sunday CANYONING – Saturday - Butterbox (Grade 5), Sunday - Fortress (Grade 2). Experience required for Saturday's canyon, but beginners are welcome to come up Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning, as we will be car camping at Mt Hay. Wetsuits required for both days.
29 Saturday KAYAK TRIP - Patonga Creek-  (10km total length ) Suitable for any canoe or kayak that can float. Leave Patonga Caravan park at 8:00am for a 5km paddle upstream on the run in tide-returning on the run out tide. Need lunch, footwear, sunscreen, lifejackets etc.  Explore mangroves and mudbanks.

29 - 7 Saturday - Sunday MULTI DAY WALK - “Walking the Great Ocean Walk – Victoria”  Cape Otway to 12 Apostles. This walk will be of 5 days duration, utilising the weekends at both ends for travel to/from start/end of the walk. This will be a multi day walk – it is NOT individual day walks. Costs, not including transport, will be approx $25/night/tent campsite (courtesy of Parks Victoria).

6 & 7 Saturday & Sunday CANYONING – Saturday Hole in the Wall – Grade 4 (wetsuits needed). Sunday – Sheepdip & Rocky Creek – Grade 2 (wetsuits needed). Maximum 8 canyoners both days. Overnight camp at Rocky Creek campsite.   
14 Sunday DAY WALK - Fountains Creek. Narara, pleasant walk along mossy rocks, come back via a short undercliff walk.Easy , Rough5 km. Bring camera.
13 & 14 Saturday & Sunday CANYONING - Saturday Fortitude (Grade 4) one very long day with very early start Saturday morning. 3 or 4 abseils, two beside waterfalls, wetsuit required, limited numbers. Sunday Scatters (Grade 1), supposedly a short day, no abseils but a few short climb-downs.  Car camp on Newnes Plateau.
27 - 4 Saturday - Sunday MULTI DAY WALK - Kiandra to Kosciusko, long car shuffle required. Tentatively 8 days walking with 2 days travelling time.

25 - 1 Thursday - Thursday MT WILSON CAR CAMP - the annual Mt Wilson car camp between Christmas and New Year is back on the calendar this year. Join BWOC members at the Cathederal Reserve in Mt Wilson. Participants will be able to join in a couple of canyons and there will possibly be some day walks, otherwise, just lay around and enjoy the great Mt Wilson weather, cool and hopefully sunny!
